MEERUT: Former UP cabinet minister and BSP leader Yaqub Qureshi and his son Imran were arrested by the Meerut unit of UP police following a tip-off on Saturday, reports Sandeep Rai. They were picked up from a house at Chandni Mahal in Delhi’s Chandni Chowk area. They carried a reward of Rs 25,000 each.
The ex-minister and his son have been sent to a jail in Meerut, police said. He had been evading arrest post the seizure of 2,000qtl of processed meat from his “non-operational” factory in Meerut on March 31, 2022.
Non-bailable warrants had been issued against the accused, wife and two sons on April 12. Yakub’s wife got anticipatory bail but none of the other kin were given relief.
Terming the development “politically motivated”, Qureshi’s lawyer said, “Gangster Act was imposed for involvement in adulterated food. The report had been released and the food (meat) was not found to be adulterated”.
