BHOPAL: A 13-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a 65-year-old BJP member in Madhya Pradesh’s Betul district, triggering violent protests on Monday night. Police are looking for the accused, Ramesh Gulhane, a former alderman in Betul municipality. A mob gheraoed the accused’s house, sending police scrambling to the scene. Gulhane managed to escape but the protesters set his car afire.
According to the complaint, Gulhane called the child to his house on Monday and raped her. He allegedly threatened her against talking to anyone about it, but she immediately confided in her parents.
Infuriated, the girl’s relatives and around 200 neighbours marched to Gulhane’s house. Seeing the mob outside, the BJP leader fled through the rear door, Betul additional SP Neeraj Soni told TOI. While the child’s parents went to file a police complaint, teams from several police stations sped to Gulhane’s house to tackle the mob. The protesters torched his car.
“There were 150-200 people. We had to use mild force to control the mob. The situation is now under control,” Betul additional SP Neeraj Soni told TOI.
