SHIVAMOGGA: An agitation by members of the Banjara and Bhovi communities against the internal reservation for the Scheduled Castes announced by the state government last week turned violent Monday as they targeted the residence of former CM BS Yediyurappa in his hometown Shikaripur, about 50 km from Shivamogga.
The protesters pelted stones and damaged windowpanes of Yediyurappa’s house. A number of cops, including a circle inspector, as well as several protesters were injured in the violence.
Police used batons to disperse the large number of protesters, which included women. Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC have been clamped on the town.
The Bhovi and Banjara communities, which come under the ‘SC Touchables’ sub-category, claim they have not been given adequate representation after the government increased SC reservation from 15% to 17% last week.
